Although predominantly a female complaint men can succumb to a yeast infection. Below we will take a look at what male yeast infection symptoms are and what can be done to alleviate the problem. It is absolutely possible for men to develop a penis yeast infection. This is caused by candida yeast, the same yeast responsible for most other types of yeast infections. Male yeast infection symptoms primarily affect the glans of the penis only, and they are more common in uncircumcised men, because the foreskin can provide an environment more conducive to the growth of yeast. Certain diseases and antibiotics can also encourage the overgrowth of candida yeast.
Causes of Yeast Infection
Yeast infections occur for a variety of reasons. Diabetics may develop yeast infections because of elevated blood sugar levels, which can nourish the yeast. Some have suggested that people who eat a diet high in sugars and processed foods may also have more yeast infections. People with diseases of the immune system, such as AIDS or HIV, can also develop frequent yeast infections.
What Part Does the Immune System Play in Yeast Infection
The immune system is usually able to keep the levels of yeast on the skin under control, but if it is compromised by immune diseases or immune-suppressing drugs such as corticosteroids, the yeast may overgrow and cause infections. Beneficial bacteria that is normally present on the skin also helps to control the amount of yeast on the body. Antibiotics can kill off some of these types of bacteria along with the harmful bacteria, allowing the yeast to grow out of control. Although condoms that contain the spermicidal Nonoxynol-9 may also contribute to developing yeast infections it is always better to wear one as yeast infections can also be passed from one person to another through unprotected sexual contact. Male yeast infection symptoms often are similar to the symptoms of women’s yeast infections. Irritation and soreness of the penis are the most common symptoms. It may become red and itchy. There may be discharge, and itchy bumps may or may not be present. Many of the male yeast infection symptoms are very similar to other types of infections, so it is a good idea to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. If it is a bacterial infection and you attempt to treat it with medication intended for a yeast infection, the medicine will have no effect.
Treatments
Yeast infections in men can be treated the same way as yeast infections in women. In some cases, antifungal creams targeted toward women may be recommended. In others, a doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal drug. Many creams and ointments are available over the counter in pharmacies. If these do not clear up a yeast infection in a week or two, you should visit your doctor. To help prevent yeast infections and to prevent becoming infected again, it is important to make sure one’s sexual partners do not have a yeast infection. Yeast infections can be passed from one person to another. It is best to avoid tight clothing and synthetic fabrics, because these can create a warm, moist environment in which yeast can thrive. If you are swimming or your clothed become wet or sweaty, you should change into clean, dry clothes as soon as possible. Wash your clothes before putting them on again. In a similar vein, try to change out of exercise clothing as soon as is practical.
